Exceptional even before groundbreaking: The captivating history of Beethovenhalle Bonn.

1954

The city of Bonn announced an architectural competition for Beethovenhalle's design. 109 architects and architecture students from across West and East Germany, Berlin, and Saarland submitted entries. The victor was Siegfried Wolske, then merely 29 years old.

1956

Federal President Theodor Heuss laid the foundation stone for Beethovenhalle on March 16, 1956, interring an urn containing soil from Beethoven's grave.

1959

Beethovenhalle opened its doors. As an example of "organic architecture," it became a symbol of the young Federal Republic.

1974

The Federal Assembly (Federal Presidential Election) came back to Bonn, convening within Beethovenhalle. The hall witnessed the elections of Walter Scheel (1974), Karl Carstens (1979), and Richard von Weizsäcker (1984, 1989) in subsequent years. During this period, Beethovenhalle additionally served as venue for official receptions, press balls, and party congresses.

1985

Arson resulted in severe damage to the acoustic ceiling, the organ, and the hall's eastern section. Beethovenhalle was compelled to close for major renovation works.

1990

Beethovenhalle received official heritage listing as a major work of post-war modern architecture, placing it under monument protection.

1996

Beethovenhalle's modernization commenced in 1996 under the guidance of original architect Siegfried Wolske. The project added three flexible seminar spaces and a conference office to the southern wing.

2007

The year 2007 marked the beginning of a festival hall debate: Three DAX-listed companies based in Bonn offered to present the city with a new festival venue. An architectural competition was organized, with the majority of submissions proposing to demolish and rebuild Beethovenhalle. The "Beethovenhalle Initiative" and heritage protection groups, however, championed its preservation.

2016

The heritage-compliant renovation of Beethovenhalle began following the International Beethoven Festival in 2016.

2025

The New Beethovenhalle Bonn Reopens.
